Sean True reports:

Further to Martyn's extensive report, I thought I might list the other things that led to our downfall.

1. Bedford is not a straight course. This is not a problem if the person steering checks the course properly beforehand. The person steering did not check the course beforehand.

2. Whilst not a straight course, Bedford is also not a slalom. Turns out that you're just supposed to stay to one side of the buoys.

3. Bedford has a return lane. This is separated from the racing lane by hopes and an ability to steer. We had one of those things.

4. Contrary to Martyn's statement, we did practise. We did the 11.5km Scrumpy Row, and a short outing to Ely and back. Unfortunately there was a small gap between that and the race. It was however the perfect practice for a 600m sprint race.

5. The most important problem, and the one that I feel that our inevitable victory was prevented by, was the oars. Our magical Concept 2 oars with the green go-faster handles had been stolen in what could only be described as a act of sabotage by another jealous Clare sculler. THIS MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE!!!

Martyn Higson reports:

Surprisingly, practising is useful if you want to win. This may have been one of our downfalls at Bedford.
